Manual Lymphatic Drainage
Lymphatic drainage massage uses a technique which focuses on a gentle pumping motion of the skin to encourage uptake of fluid into the lymphatic system and through the lymph nodes.
The touch is incredibly gentle so as not to compress the lymphatic capillaries but to assist their function. The treatment follows a particular sequence which encourages the flow of lymph back toward the bloodstream.
The lymphatic system works alongside the circulatory system to transport fluid around the body, specifically fluid from the tissue which has not been reabsorbed into the blood. This fluid is taken in by the lymphatic capillaries, filtered through lymph nodes and then returned into the bloodstream. It is also an important part of the immune system as it produces lymphocytes which are cells that help to fight infection in the body.
This treatment can be effective in preventing stagnation of the lymphatic system, lymphedema, reducing swelling from an injury or post-surgery, removing metabolic waste from the body as well as supporting the immune system through increased production of lymphocytes. This treatment can also be a great way to combat stress as it is incredibly relaxing.
